Way of Deeds — Skanne

Those of Skanne descent recognize a gender that is walked rather than worn. In the old days, the Skanne had simpler terms: if you kept the hearth and raised the children, that work defined you one way; if you took up the axe and went to war, that work defined you another — and the body you were born in had nothing to do with it. What mattered was the deed, not the flesh. As The Faith spread through Skania, the old directional terms once used for this experience gradually fell away. What remained was Verkferð: the recognition that some people’s gender lives in what they do rather than what they are at rest. If you find your nature in the work of your hands and the path you walk rather than in a category you were assigned at birth, the Skanne have always had a name for you.
